« Morph & In-line functions: The power behind the panels | Main | Jackie O., Sandra Oh, and Lindsay Lo: July Smart Answers »
We've talked quite a bit lately about all the great stuff inside Ask3D. Now we're going to take a look at its outside, i.e. our home page.
Yep, we've got a whole new look, with new icons painstakingly designed to represent the various Ask.com search tools.
And there's plenty of function that goes with it, like search suggestions that automatically reveal themselves as you type.
And check this out: you can re-skin your Ask.com home page whenever you feel like it. Here are a few of the options you can choose from:
Of course, once you get past this page, you'll get our three-panel results page, our various in-line content functions , and all the other great new Ask3D features. Check 'em out!

» Ask.com gets a makeover from The Search for Conversions
Ask.com, in an effort to differentiate themselves have had a pretty major makeover in the last month so I thought I'd take another look. First impressions. Well you may be beautiful, but you lost me at .co.uk. That's right, because [Read More]

» ASK Home Page from Search Engine Land: News About Search Engines & Search Marketing
The Ask.com blog has a piece on their home page, which they are particularly proud of, and I think rightly so. They talk about their icons, suggest feature, and skins, all of which are worth a quick peek.... [Read More]

» ASK 3D - New but not good enough from MJR slef-reflection
ASK 3D has launched. It looks pretty, but I don't see much improvement on the actual searching...I'm ready to switch search engines, but it won't be to this version of Ask 3D. ... [Read More]

I liked Timber Brume best. It does not interfere with the search interface too much, and it is pretty nice to look at.
Will it be possible to use costume search desktop backgrounds? I think that would be great.
I have to reload the entire page when changing skins in Opera 9.21 (32bit) on KUbuntu Linux 7.04 (64bit) to see the changes. Possibly a bug?

Ask is becoming the BEAUTIFUL Search engine!

I get a completely different page when I enter ask.com in Germany. It's annoying how I always click to "Ask.com USA" and the next time I enter "ask.com", it will have already forgotten my setting (which I already provide via my browser settings, which are set to English). Wish you could do it as smart as Google, which acknowledge both the content negotiation protocol, and auto-saves my last clicked country in a cookie.

love the icons and design work that's gone into this.

I don't know if keeping everything *identical* and changing the *wallpaper* counts as "skinning" it.
Actually, I'm confident it doesn't. So, let's not get too excited about this "skinnable" page. It's a good idea, but you haven't actually implemented it yet.
And I really don't like your 3-column page. Setting up some "skinnable" elements serving as various dividers might help it out somewhat; at the moment, the main page and left-hand bar both look like AdSense ads. It's off-putting.

So, if you click on one of the other boxes - city, images, etc., it takes you to a whole new page. seems to me that that breaks the metaphor. It should just change the little pointer to point to that instead of to the "Web" box.
I would like to be able to change the background without having to register... You could do it based on cookies, and I would be happy.

Someone at ask.com is a spud. Searching for Devo!

I don't like the way search results fade in. Though nice to look at, it just makes searching arbitrarily slower. Shouldn't there be an option to turn this feature off? I honestly would use ask more if this was the case.

The backgrounds are beautiful but wish I could use some of my Flickr favorites as the background. Any plans for that ?

They've lost me as a customer because of the design change. My default Ask Dictionary Word of the Day vanished. And I used them like a Yahoo page not a Google page. Who exactly is their competition. They just didn't get it.

The Funniest part is that they are trying to copy the simplicity of Google, ehm ehm, Microsoft take a damn hint!

Design looks really good. When Ask.com announced the new design, I thought there will be just one version of it. Seems like you can choose from the selections. I am sure it would appeal to lots of people with different interests
