« AskCity Gives You the Business | Main | THE YEAR IN ASK 2006 »
It's been a whirlwind of activity over here with the launch of AskCity, and we're just now catching our breath and getting the lay of the land. We've seen hundreds of news items and blog headlines about the product, and the positive ones outweigh the negatives at a rate of about 100 to Scoble. We've seen posts like TechCrunch's "AskCity Launches. It's Cool" and "Ask City: The Online Map With The Best Features Hands Down" over at CyberNet News--not to mention glowing reports from both the New York and LA Times (subscription required for both).
It's always nice to be appreciated. But since at our core we're more geek than debutante, we've actually been focusing more on how people are using AskCity. We've collated the top queries from our first week and thought you might be interested to see what we've found so far:
Top 10 Dining Choices in Business Search:
1. Pizza
2. Italian
3. Traditional American
4. Sushi
5. Coffee
6. Chinese
7. Starbucks
8. Fast food
9. Deli
10. Mexican
Pizza and Italian as our top two queries? Interesting. Future restaurateurs take note!
Top 10 Artists in Event Search:
1. Madonna
2. U2
3. Rolling Stones
4. Dave Matthews
5. The Who
6. Rod Stewart
7. Justin Timberlake
8. Incubus
9. Dixie Chicks
10. Damien Rice
Mostly currently touring acts with some newsmakers mixed in. Before the weekend, Madonna was in the #6 slot...now she's #1. Must be those three Grammy noms.
Top 10 Services in Business Search:
1. Massage
2. Shopping mall
3. Hospitals
4. Family doctor
5. Churches
6. Plumber
7. Florist
8. Police department
9. General practice attorneys
10. Auto repair
Hospitals, churches, police departments and attorneys in the Top Ten? Sounds like you people had a rough week. No wonder you're looking for a good massage.

Wow! Thanks for the list. Will you guys continue releasing weekly data or is it just for today. I think you should continue it at least monthly that way we the users can keep up with what's most popular.
Thank You

Hey, I was totally trying to use the thing last week in Chicago to find a restaurant, find local things, etc. But you refused to let me actually get to it on a Windows Mobile device. You kept redirecting me to Ask Mobile where Ask City isn't listed at all. I was seriously bummed wanting to try it out. Please stop the redirection!

Hi Danny--glad to hear that you're firing up Ask on your PDA. Here’s why you’re getting a re-direct to Mobile when looking for AskCity:
Unfortunately the combination of technologies used to build AskCity won't work on today's mobile phones and devices (including, yes, your Windows Mobile device). Our goal is to make Ask Mobile the quickest and most seamless experience possible, so we want to see how people are using AskCity online before transferring it lock, stock, and barrel to the phone.
Of course, you can search for businesses and get maps & directions on both Ask Mobile and AskCity. In fact, both are available from the Ask Mobile home page screen. That said, we’re working to bring more AskCity content to Ask Mobile in the near future.
